Transperineal Ultrasound
Transperineal Ultrasound
Bowel leakage? Now you can see why with a 2D- 3D Fecal Incontinence Protocol Ultrasound Exam.
A gentle, external 3D ultrasound that shows your doctor whether the muscles that hold in gas and stool are intact or torn, not only that you leak.
You Are Not Alone
Bowel leakage is more common than most people think. About 1 in 11 women in the United States experience it. Few talk about it.
Bowel leakage is a medical problem, not something to live with quietly after childbirth or with age. Many sphincter tears from childbirth are never recognized at delivery: in one study of first-time mothers, 60 of the 69 women found to have a significant sphincter injury had no injury recorded at birth. Knowing whether the muscle is torn matters.
How It Works
A 3D transperineal ultrasound exam, done from the outside. A small ultrasound probe is placed on the skin between the vagina and the anus. Nothing goes inside the anus. While you rest and gently squeeze, we record a 3D image of the anal canal. The image is then divided into thin slices (Tomographic Ultrasound Image-TUI) so each sphincter muscle can be checked along its whole length.
The right exam for your question
Fecal Incontinence Protocol. For leakage of gas, liquid or solid stool, trouble holding it in time, or a sphincter tear during childbirth. Looks at the external and internal anal sphincters.
-2D/3D dynamic ultrasound with tomographic slice analysis (TUI)
-No probe inside the anus. No needle. No radiation. No contrast.
Exam Duration: 35 minutes.
Preparation: Purchase one Fleet enema from the Pharmacy (the enemas are over the counter). Take one Fleet enema the morning before your ultrasound Test. Don’t eat anything 8 hours before the test.
-Take your regular medications. Prior to the exam, the bladder must be empty.
Note: A fleet enema is a bottle with 133 ml of liquid in it. It has a nozzle that is covered with gel. Apply it while lying on your side, inserting the nozzle into the anus and squirting the full content of the bottle into the rectum. An urge to go to the toilet will follow the application. Try to wait for 3 to 5 minutes before going to the toilet. After this, your rectum should be completely empty optimizing ultrasound images.
